Angie Hart (of Frente! & Splendid fame) and Glenn Bennie (GB3, Underground Lovers) have collaborated on a cover of the Go-Between’s Devil’s Eye. It’s a great cover of the song, with Glenn and Angie complementing each other’s talents.
The song is part of Love goes on Anyway, a tribute album to Grant McLennan, The Go-Betweens singer-songwriter who died earlier this year. It’s great to see that this tribute album is being produced by an indie label, Rare Victory Records, as The Go-Betweens were one of Australia’s great indie bands.
Love Goes On Anyway, A Tribute to Grant McLennan, is Rare Victory Records’ testament to just how much of an effect the Go-Betweens had on an entire generation of music fans and musicians. These new versions that we’re hearing as they trickle in from various artists are astonishing, and they seem to conjure up the very spirit of what Grant and Robert were after, picking up a piece of the past and making it live again.
Grant wrote and sang the Actress On A Mattress song on GB3’s Emptiness is our Business album. In a recent interview with Australian Music Online Glenn talked about the recording of Actress with Grant:
The highlight of the recording process was working with the late, great Grant McLennan in Sydney in November last year. The song we produced is called Actress on a Mattress. Grant flew down from Brisbane and I flew up from Melbourne. We met on neutral territory and worked in a fabulous studio on Sydney Harbour called Niki Nali. Our backdrop was the Harbour Bridge and the memories of the day are strong in my mind. It was the last time I was to see Grant before he died. We spent the day with engineer Wayne Connolly who is brilliant and always full of funny stories about the industry. Grant took over in the studio and wove his magic. His last idea for the track before he walked off into the night was for me to whistle part of the melody in the outro of the song. Grant loved the idea but we ditched it in the final mix. Both Tim Whitten (mixer) and I are cross at ourselves now for leaving it out. So much so that we are doing a new acoustic mix that features the whistling. Kind of a tribute to Grant.
Previously Angie Hart provided the vocals for Guillotine, a GB3 original. Guillotine is, like all Angie’s work, a beautiful song. It nearly didn’t make it onto the Emptiness is our Business album as it was just luck that Angie and Glenn were able to meet up to record it in Melbourne. From the Rubber Records GB3 page:
Highlighting the lead single as track 9: ‘Guillotine’, featuring the beautiful angelic vocals of Miss Angie Hart, sometimes timeless art can take no time at all as Glenn explains… “This was the last song we did. The music was sitting around and it looked like nothing was going to happen with it. Angie was still in LA and I was hoping she’d record something over there. Then she got in touch, saying, ‘I’m back in Melbourne, can I pop into the studio?’ Within 30 minutes, we’d put it all down.”
What’s more, all these songs are available to listen to (and in Guillotine’s case, watch) for free on MySpace. Guillotine has it’s own page, Actress On A Mattress is on the GB3 page and Devil’s Eye is on the playlist on the Rare Victory page.
