A plugin to display a bible ‘verse of the day’ on your Wordpress blog
OK, after over a week in pre-release status and with no kicking & screaming about it not working I’ve decided to go live with the new version. For those who missed the pre-release announcement, here are the major changes:
This is a completely new plugin, with a bunch of changes, the most obvious ones are that the program no-longer uses the troublesome cache files and the options are now set in an options page, not as parameters set in the code. This should make life a whole lot easier. Unfortunately this means that there is no support for Wordpress versions less than 1.5. The old version of the plugin could do this because the code was a whole lot simpler. Now that the plugin is simpler to use, the code is more complex, and makes use of a number of nifty Wordpress features that I was completely un-aware of 1st time around.
There is now also a Verse of the Day Plugin Page which will contain all information about the plugin and will be updated as needed.
So, as always, please download the plugin and let me know how it goes. I’m still open to comments. Bug fixes will get implemented straight away, but new features will probably have to wait ’till next time.

Thanks very much for developing this plugin; I’ve wanted something like this for a while. Unfortunately after installing it, I am not getting any verse to display. I’m using WP 1.5.3. Any suggestions would be appreciated.
Hello Steve, and thanks.
I assume you’ve put the <?php wp_votd(); ?> tag on your site inside the list tags under the Votd heading? If so, try going into the options page for the plugin and pressing the ‘Update’ button, which will force the plugin to refresh.

Thanks for the updated plugin — the old version was breaking my dashboard (something to do with magpie)
Anyway, the new one works great – though I had to migrate the hacks I’d made to the old version… Basically, I break the NIV feed into chunks so that I can style them differently… I can send you my code if you want.
One little quirk… when I tried to set the refresh time to zero (for testing, only!) all I got for output was ‘1′.

Well spotted Colin!
I’ve fixed that up now, if you want to re-download the plugin from http://svn.wp-plugins.org/wp-votd/tags/2.5/wp-votd-plugin.zip

Hi! Your plugin is exactly what I hoped to find, add or develop for our website. Thanks a lot. The most simple plugin to install too! Liked your site. Will keep an eye on it.
You might like to add CartoonChurch into your Christian Resource links…some great material for the lighter side of our faith. Some ideas for wp-plugins i’ve had include… a scrolling votd header bar with customisable colours and fonts. And a Wordpress plugin that allows viewers to find a church using Google Earth and their postcode?

I’m trying to get the votd plugin working and I’m not getting a verse to display. Does the votd plugin work with WordPress 2.0?
I just got it working, of course I would since I asked for help. I clicked the update button under options and waaa laa!
Thanks for a great plugin.
