Finally got my internet connection back up!
Development
- Following on from all that Fizz-Buzz discussion last week, Phil Haack looks as recursion vs using stacks and why recursion isn’t always the best solution.
- Jeff Atwood looks at using Amazon’s S3 service for hosting images to reduce bandwidth and finds the great S3Fox Organizer for FireFox.
- FreshBooks, the best invoicing solution I’ve found, has just announced that they’ve joined with Basecamp to make online organising of tasks and projects even easier. Signup here & I get a kickback!
- The Google Webmaster Central Blog has a post up on the correct use of the site: command and how it will be changing in the near future.
Blogging
- Innovation Zen has a good post on why blogs are the new resumes.
- You can now use your WordPress.com url as an OpenID
- Jeff Jarvis on teaching journalism in the new media age.
The real lesson in all this, I think, is not about tools, skills or business forecasting. It is about embracing change, instilling a culture of innovation and experimentation and a willingness to question and try and fail. That is what the news business needs most today. It’s not about establishing a new orthodoxy of a new media priesthood; I hope we never reach that.
Science & Tech
- Another article supposing that we’re hardwired to believe in God. Of course this idea can support both the Atheist and Religious positions, so it doesn’t really get us much closer to the truth.
- Whirlpool’s 2006 broadband survey results are in. Most surprising results: wireless is loosing interest & VOIP growth has slowed dramatically.
- Conservapedia. Really, I mean, this is a joke right? Upset because Wikipedia uses the UK spelling of some words?
Gaming
- Commodore is going to return to making computers. They’re planning to build dedicated gaming PCs.
- A Lego MMO game may be coming! I want in on that, never mind WoW.
- The first ever HD South Park episode will be made available for free on Xbox Live Marketplace.
Misc.
- Turkey has banned YouTube because someone on there called them names. Vent Cerf explains why this is a dumb idea. Victorian Dept. of Education, are you listening?
- The Barenaked Ladies are launching a DRM-free new album over the internet.
The price always starts at free, and as more people download the song, the price starts to rise, eventually hitting $.98. Higher priced songs are by definition more popular, and I’ve found that anything over $.50 or so is pretty good music. 70% of proceeds go to the band/label, and Amie Street keeps the rest.
- The Colbert report on the death of Captain America.
Update
I forgot the video. This demo of the Crytech engine is very cool
