Paul Hester (1959 – 2005)

Paul HesterUnless you’ve been living under a rock somewhere on Mars, you’ll know that former Crowded House & Split Enz drummer Paul Hester killed himself on the 26th of March. This is truly tragic news. If you grew up with Crowded House then I don’t need to explain just how important & influential their music was. And if you didn’t, I don’t know if I adequately can.

But I’ll give it a shot.

Their music was beautiful. Heart-aching or joyous, but beautiful. Their songs stretched the whole expanse of human emotion. From the fun of Sister Madly to the melancholy of Nails in my Feet, Neil Finn’s amazing voice combined with Nick Seymour’s bass & Paul’s brilliant rhythm (and later Mark Hart’s keyboard & guitar) created a group that was greater than the sum of it’s parts. This is not to say that individually they were not great musicians, but while I love Neil’s individual offerings (and those with his brother) nothing he’s produced since comes close to the musical poetry that was Crowded House.

A few web-related things happening around locally in the last few days:

The Truth Laid Bear: Basic Functions Reactivated

The Truth Laid Bear Ecosystem is back on the air, NZ Bear having finished his debugging.

As far as I can see, the plugin for pulling your status has just picked up where it left off, there should be no need for you to do anything, within 24 hours of the functionality coming back up, you should have seen the status re-appear on your site.

If you’re using this plugin & it hasn’t come back, please leave a comment here to let me know.

It's a girl!

At 5:33am this morning my wife gave birth to our third child, Lillian Elizabeth Slaven. Mum and bub are doing fine & should be out of hospital tomorrow, God willing. Prayers for them are appreciated (and for me, that I’ll be able to cope!)

I’m likely to be incommunicado for the next few days, so if anyone posts any questions about WordPress plugins, I will get back to you, just probably next week some time.

Verse of the Day WordPress Plugin

Last update: version 2.5 has been released

Update Again: New version of the plugin now available

Another Update: A call for beta testers for version 2.0 of the plugin

Update: This plugin has been updated to include support for enclosures.

Previously, the VotD script on the sidebar of this site was generated by a perl script that parsed the RSS feed provided by Good News Publishers for the ESV bible.

To setup this script required you to copy the script into your cgi-bin, setup a location for the cache file, add the script to cron to run daily & then put the include tags into the code. This was all well & good for nerds such as myself who’re familiar with this, but it was a bit of a stretch for the general public. Also, I’ve found that a surprising number of hosting companies don’t allow their customers access to cron.

TTLB Ecosystem plugin moved to wp-plugins.org

Finally got around to uploading my first WordPress plugin to the WordPress Plugins Repository. I’ll now be using the repository to host the plugin and to do any further development on. The latest version can be found here. I’ve also updated the WordPress Plugins Database entry for this plugin, so the one-click install pulls from the Repository now.
